Do I pay tax on side-hustle or freelance income?
Yes. Side-hustle and freelance income is generally taxable and must be declared, even when clients pay into a personal bank account or no IRP5 is issued. A sole proprietor reports business income and allowable expenses on the ITR12. Depending on the facts and total income, provisional tax may also apply.

The points that decide the answer
- Tax applies to taxable profit, not automatically to every rand of sales.
- Expenses must be connected to producing the income, with private portions excluded.
- Multiple income sources can create an assessment balance because PAYE from a salary did not cover the extra profit.
- Regular commercial activity needs proper invoices, records and possibly VAT or employer registrations as it grows.
A practical way to handle it
- Separate business receipts and payments from personal spending.
- Reconcile income to invoices, platforms and bank deposits.
- Classify allowable costs and retain evidence.
- Estimate annual taxable income and provisional obligations early.
Common mistakes
- Assuming small amounts are invisible
- Claiming all phone, rent or vehicle costs
- Waiting for filing season to calculate profit
What to keep on file
Invoices, platform statements, bank records, contracts, expense slips and mileage or apportionment schedules.
