How do I object to a SARS assessment?
If an assessment is wrong, first check whether a Request for Correction is available. If not, a formal objection is generally due within 80 business days of the assessment or applicable SARS decision. The objection must identify the disputed amounts, legal or factual grounds and supporting evidence.
Last reviewed:
The points that decide the answer
- A complaint about service is different from a tax dispute.
- Requesting reasons can affect the objection timeline when SARS has not adequately explained the assessment.
- An objection does not automatically suspend collection. A separate suspension-of-payment request may be needed.
- If the objection is disallowed, an appeal has its own deadline and process.
A practical way to handle it
- Download the assessment, return and calculation.
- Decide between correction, reduced assessment, reasons or objection.
- Draft grounds for each disputed adjustment and attach indexed evidence.
- Submit on eFiling, save proof and diary every next deadline.
Common mistakes
- Writing only that the assessment is unfair
- Missing the deadline while waiting for documents
- Submitting evidence with no explanation
