How do I correct a wrong TFI amount on my SARS return?

How do I correct a tax-free investment amount SARS prepopulated incorrectly?

Direct answer

Do not accept a tax-free investment amount merely because it appears prepopulated on your SARS return. Compare it with the provider's IT3(s) certificate and account statements for the relevant year. If the provider data is wrong or incomplete, ask the provider to correct it in writing and preserve the request. Use the current ITR12 process to submit a supported return, or to revise a filed return if the correction is needed after submission.

A prepopulated item is useful information, not a replacement for your own reconciliation. The important question is what the amount represents: a contribution, withdrawal, qualifying transfer or investment growth. These entries can have different effects, and a high balance is not automatically a contribution.

What this means in practice

Begin with the year of assessment. A provider statement covering calendar dates may not match the SARS tax year, so identify the exact dates on the certificate. If you use more than one TFI provider, prepare one schedule covering all accounts. Record each payment in, payment out, direct provider-to-provider transfer and correction.

SARS explains that the annual and lifetime limits apply to tax-free investments and that excess contributions can lead to normal tax. This is why an incorrect contribution amount should be addressed before you accept an assessment. However, do not invent a replacement number because it seems more favourable. The number must be supported by the provider record, bank evidence and transaction trail.

Sometimes the issue is not an error. A direct provider transfer and a cash withdrawal followed by a deposit may look similar in a personal bank statement, but they can have different treatment. Likewise, investment growth belongs in the account balance but is not simply another cash contribution. Ask the provider to explain a line you cannot identify. Its written explanation is stronger evidence than a memory of a call-centre conversation.

If the certificate and SARS display agree but you think both are wrong, retain the supporting evidence and take advice before changing a return. A correction to third-party information can take time to flow through systems. The aim is a properly supported result, not forcing an immediate screen change.

Step-by-step

  1. Save the prepopulated return view.

Download or print the return information before changing it. Record the source year, provider and amount shown.

  1. Obtain the provider evidence.

Download the relevant IT3(s) certificate, annual statement and transaction history. If an account moved provider, obtain evidence from both sides of the move.

  1. Build a simple reconciliation.

List each date, amount, account and transaction type. Separate contributions from withdrawals, transfers and investment returns. Reconcile totals to bank payments where appropriate.

  1. Identify the source of the difference.

Check for duplicate certificates, wrong-year amounts, an omitted account, a transfer wrongly described as a contribution, or an unrecognised payment. Do not combine unlike items simply to make the total match.

  1. Ask the provider for correction where its reporting is wrong.

Send a concise written request with the certificate, account number, relevant dates and your supporting schedule. Save the provider's acknowledgement and final response.

  1. Use the current ITR12 process.

Complete, submit or revise the return only with supported information. Keep the final return, assessment and correspondence together in case SARS asks for verification evidence.

Documents and records to keep

  • Screenshots or PDFs of the prepopulated return information.
  • IT3(s) certificates and full-year provider statements.
  • Bank proof for contributions and a cross-provider reconciliation.
  • The provider correction request and outcome.
  • Filed ITR12, ITA34 and SARS correspondence.

Important limits and exceptions

Do not confuse the tax year used by SARS with a calendar-year account report. Limits and return fields can change, so use the current ITR12 guide and the figure relevant to the actual year of assessment. An amount can also be correct even if it surprises you, for example where you made a deposit through a different provider or a payment was processed on a different date than expected.

This guide does not replace the process for objecting to an assessment. If an assessment is already issued and you disagree after reviewing the evidence, get timely advice on the appropriate SARS route. Keep the provider-data correction separate from the legal question of whether SARS's assessment should be disputed.

When to get tailored advice

Get advice if the amounts are large, you have used several providers, a withdrawal and reinvestment occurred, the account relates to an estate, or you are close to a contribution limit. TaxProof can help build an evidence schedule and identify records to request, but a final dispute or tax opinion should be reviewed on its facts.
