How do I report tax-free investment contributions on my ITR12?

Direct answer

Use your tax-free-investment, or TFI, provider's annual IT3(s) certificate and account statements to check the information shown in your ITR12. SARS receives information from providers, but prepopulated information should still be reconciled. Contributions, withdrawals, qualifying transfers and investment growth are different figures and should not be substituted for one another. The provider, not SARS, is normally the first party to correct incorrect third-party source data. Keep your certificate, ask the provider to investigate a discrepancy and retain the correction trail before finalising the return.

What this means in practice

Tax-free does not mean record-free. A TFI can produce interest, dividends and capital growth that are tax-free within the account, while SARS monitors contributions against annual and lifetime limits. Providers report relevant information to SARS and issue an annual IT3(s) certificate to the taxpayer. The account balance is not the contribution total. Returns that stay within the account can increase its value without using additional contribution room. Conversely, cash withdrawn and later reinvested can count as a new contribution even if it feels like moving your own money around. If you have accounts at more than one provider, you need to aggregate the contribution picture. Do not look at each account in isolation. The annual and lifetime limits apply per person across accounts, including an account opened for a minor child, where that child's limits are used.

Step-by-step

  1. Gather every provider certificate.

Download the IT3(s) certificate from each bank, insurer, platform or fund manager for the relevant tax year. Include a provider that you moved away from during the year.

  1. Build a contribution schedule.

Record cash contributions, withdrawals and documented transfers separately. Do not include interest, dividends or market growth as new cash contributions.

  1. Review the account records.

Match the certificate to your deposits, debit orders and transfer instructions. Identify a payment that was reversed, duplicated or made close to tax-year end.

  1. Check the ITR12 prepopulation.

Compare current SARS data with each certificate. Do not accept it automatically and do not type in a different figure simply to make the return look consistent.

  1. Correct third-party information where needed.

Contact the provider with the certificate and statement evidence. Ask it to correct and resend information to SARS if its data is incorrect. Keep its written response.

  1. Keep your filing pack.

Save certificates, statements, the return, ITA34 and correspondence. This is the evidence needed if SARS queries the figures later.

Documents and records to keep

  • Annual IT3(s) tax-free-investment certificates.
  • Provider statements showing deposits, withdrawals and transfers.
  • Transfer applications and confirmations.
  • A cross-provider contribution schedule.
  • ITR12, ITA34 and data-correction correspondence.

Important limits and exceptions

This is not a guide to choosing an investment product or calculating an excess contribution amount. Limits change by year and the relevant year must be used. A provider statement may contain a capitalised return that has increased the balance but is not a contribution. A withdrawal followed by a reinvestment can be a new contribution, while a qualifying direct transfer is different. Do not assume an unused annual amount carries forward. SARS states that unused annual capacity is forfeited. Do not rely on a current dashboard where it conflicts with the annual IT3(s) certificate or a provider correction.
