Does a CIPC company need separate SARS registration?

Does a CIPC-registered company need a separate SARS income-tax registration?

Last reviewed:

Direct answer

Generally not for the initial corporate income-tax number. When a company is registered with CIPC, SARS automatically generates a company income-tax reference number. The company representative must still register or activate access on eFiling, confirm the company details and manage its returns.

Automatic income-tax registration does not automatically register VAT, PAYE, UIF, SDL or customs obligations. Those tax types require separate tests and action when applicable.

What this means in practice

Do not assume that no visible eFiling profile means no tax number exists. First link the company to its authorised representative and retrieve the SARS notice of registration. Resolve mismatched CIPC, identity, address or public-officer data before filing deadlines.

A dormant or pre-trading company can still have ITR14 and CIPC obligations.

Step-by-step

  1. Complete the CIPC incorporation and retain the documents.
  2. Confirm the company's income-tax number with SARS.
  3. Register the representative and link the company on eFiling.
  4. Verify registered particulars and communication channels.
  5. Test VAT and employer-tax registration separately.
  6. Diary provisional and annual company deadlines.

Documents and records to keep

  • CIPC registration certificate and MOI.
  • SARS income-tax notice of registration.
  • Representative appointment and board resolution.
  • eFiling profile confirmation.
  • Tax-type registrations and returns.

Important limits and exceptions

Sole proprietors and ordinary partnerships do not use this CIPC company process. A co-operative or foreign company can have different registration steps.
