Why a tax type is missing from SARS eFiling

Why is my tax type missing from SARS eFiling?

Direct answer

Start in Manage Tax Types in the correct eFiling portfolio. An individual profile displays taxes for which that person is registered. Organisation and tax-practitioner profiles display the taxpayer's tax types, reference numbers, activation status and available actions. If a type is listed but inactive, request activation. If it is associated with another profile, a transfer may be required. If it is not registered with SARS, activation alone cannot create it.

The absence of a tax type on one screen does not, by itself, prove why it is absent.

What this means in practice

Several different situations can look like a missing tax type. The taxpayer may be in the wrong portfolio. The type may appear as inactive. It may be active with another party and require a transfer. Or the taxpayer may need a SARS registration or registration record correction before that product can appear.

Keep the three issues separate. Registration is the process of adding or maintaining a SARS tax-product subscription. Activation makes a registered tax type usable in eFiling. A transfer changes which eFiling profile has access and can require approval from the owner or registered representative.

Step-by-step

  1. Check the selected portfolio and taxpayer.

An individual has one individual portfolio, while an eFiling user can have organisation or practitioner portfolios. Select the relevant taxpayer before deciding a type is absent. In an organisation or practitioner portfolio, use the taxpayer search with the correct name, registration number, ID number or tax reference number.

  1. Open Manage Tax Types.

On an individual portfolio, the route is Home, User, Tax Types, then Manage Tax Types. On organisation and practitioner portfolios, open the selected taxpayer details and choose Manage Tax Types.

  1. Read the displayed status and action.

SARS says the organisation and practitioner view shows linked tax types, reference numbers, activation status and possible actions. A type marked inactive is different from a type that does not appear. Choose Request Activation or another action only where eFiling presents it for that tax type.

  1. Follow the transfer path when applicable.

If the eFiling screen indicates that the type is active with another party or offers a transfer action, submit the request through Manage Tax Types. SARS says the owner or registered representative must approve a tax type transfer before it is complete.

  1. Check SARS registration records if the type is not listed.

RAV01 allows authorised users to maintain registered particulars and add a new tax-product subscription. Use the RAV01 process or contact SARS about the registration record instead of treating eFiling activation as a substitute for registration.

  1. Keep the final confirmation.

Retain the eFiling request summary, displayed status and any approval communication. This helps distinguish a pending transfer from a completed activation if you need to follow up.

Documents and records to keep

  • The taxpayer's tax reference number, registration number or ID number.
  • Access to the correct eFiling portfolio and relevant taxpayer group.
  • Any owner or registered-representative approval needed for a transfer.
  • RAV01 supporting material if SARS requests it for a registration change.
  • Screens or confirmations showing the status and action selected.

Important limits and exceptions

SARS's eFiling guide does not provide one confirmed cause for every missing tax type. Do not diagnose a system fault, a rejection or a tax obligation merely from a missing menu option.

An individual list contains taxes for which the individual is registered. A RAV01 registration request remains subject to SARS rules, authority and possible supporting documents. A transfer is not finished until the required owner or registered representative approves it.

When to get tailored advice

Get tailored advice where the missing type could affect VAT, PAYE, provisional tax or company filings, or where different advisers and representatives have access to the taxpayer. The correct technical action depends on the underlying registration and authority.

TaxProof can help map the question to the relevant tax-registration or return guide and organise SARS messages. SARS determines registration, eFiling status and transfer approval.
