Why has my SARS payment not allocated to the correct tax period?
Why has my SARS payment not allocated to the correct tax period?

Direct answer
If a SARS payment appears against the wrong tax period, do not assume immediately that the payment has disappeared. First compare the intended payment item with the Payment Advice Notice, its payment reference number, the bank confirmation and the current SARS account record. SARS says that correct references are needed for it to identify and allocate internet payments, and that the PAN's 19-digit reference helps allocate payment to the correct taxpayer account.
If those records still conflict, preserve them and use an official SARS enquiry route to ask for review. Avoid making another payment just because the allocation is not yet visible. A duplicate payment can create a second problem.
What this means in practice
There are several possible reasons for an apparent allocation problem. The payment may have been made with a reference connected to another item. The taxpayer may be reviewing a different tax account or period. The bank payment may have been successful but the SARS account may not yet reflect the expected view. Or SARS may need to review the account record. The evidence tells you which possibility is most plausible.
Start with the original intended obligation. It may be an assessment, a Statement of Account, a return or a PAN. Record the tax type, period, amount and due date. Then compare the payment amount and date on the bank record. Finally, check the PRN. If the PAN and bank transaction do not show the same information you expected, do not try to fix the history by editing documents or changing the reference on a copied record.
An allocation question is different from a tax dispute. If you think the assessed amount is wrong, you may need a separate objection or correction process. If the amount is right but the payment is not displayed as expected, the immediate task is to establish the payment trail.
Step-by-step
- Download or save the latest account evidence.
Open the relevant SARS account, assessment or statement. Note the taxpayer, tax type and period that appears unpaid or incorrectly paid.
- Retrieve the original payment documents.
Find the PAN, payment reference, eFiling payment details and bank confirmation. Keep the original files, including dates and amounts.
- Compare the four key facts.
Check the taxpayer, tax type or item, period and payment reference. A payment with the right amount can still have been connected to the wrong item if the reference was not the one generated for the intended obligation.
- Check whether the payment is visible elsewhere.
Where you have several tax products or reference numbers, make sure you are in the correct profile and account view. Do not treat an unallocated amount or another account's balance as automatic proof of a missing payment.
- Prepare a concise enquiry pack.
If the mismatch remains, keep the PAN, bank proof, intended liability and current account record together. State only the facts: what was intended, what was paid, which PRN was used and what the account now displays.
- Monitor the account after any SARS response.
Save case references and later correspondence. Check whether the account view changes, but do not discard the original evidence once it does.
Documents and records to keep
- Current SARS Statement of Account or assessment.
- The PAN and 19-digit PRN.
- eFiling payment record and bank payment confirmation.
- A note of the intended tax type, period and amount.
- SARS case number, response and updated account evidence.
Important limits and exceptions
SARS does not say that every payment will appear immediately or that every apparent wrong-period issue has the same cause. Do not promise a client that a payment will move automatically or within a stated number of days. SARS may need to assess the individual account record.
Do not pay a second time without reviewing the facts. If there is a looming deadline, seek tailored advice promptly so you can distinguish a genuine unpaid liability from an allocation-display problem. Do not use an account allocation enquiry to ignore an outstanding return or a disputed assessment.
When to get tailored advice
Get help if VAT, PAYE, provisional tax or multiple company reference numbers are involved, if the payment is material, or if a debt collection or compliance-status issue has developed. TaxProof can help prepare the reconciliation pack. SARS decides the allocation and account outcome.
