How is pension income taxed after I retire?

Direct answer

Regular pension payments after retirement are generally taxable income. The pension fund or insurer should issue the relevant tax certificate, and the income may be prepopulated on the ITR12. Check that information against the certificate and your records before you submit.

PAYE deducted from a pension payment is withholding during the year. It does not guarantee that your final annual tax position is settled. A second pension, rental income, investment income, work after retirement, medical credits or other return information can change the final assessment.

What this means in practice

Pension income is often more predictable than employment income, but it still needs annual attention. A pensioner may receive more than one certificate, for example from a pension fund, retirement annuity or employer. More than one certificate is not automatically an error. It can reflect different income streams that SARS needs to see together.

Start with the documents rather than the balance you see in eFiling. Compare the certificate numbers, payer names, tax year, gross income and PAYE against the prepopulated return. If an issuer's information is missing or wrong, ask that issuer to investigate and correct the source record. Do not invent a replacement certificate figure in an attempt to force the return to match.

Where pension income has a foreign element, a disability component or a historic exemption claim, the answer may not be a simple certificate check. Those situations need their own evidence and may need advice. This article deals with ordinary recurring pension reporting, not a retirement lump sum or a foreign-pension treaty conclusion.

Step-by-step

  1. Gather every income certificate.

Keep the pension fund or insurer certificate, any IRP5 or IT3(a), and certificates for other income. Make sure they all relate to the same tax year.

  1. Review the prepopulated ITR12.

Open the return and compare each certificate entry with the paper or electronic certificate. Check that separate pensions have not been confused with duplicates.

  1. Check PAYE separately from income.

Note the gross pension income and the PAYE shown on each certificate. A deduction on a payslip is not a final calculation of your annual liability.

  1. Add other information carefully.

Include other income and deductions only where they are relevant and supported. Medical scheme and investment entries have separate certificates and rules.

  1. Resolve certificate errors at source.

If the fund or insurer sent incorrect information to SARS, request a corrected and resubmitted certificate. Keep the correspondence and refresh eFiling only after the issuer confirms the correction.

  1. Save the assessment.

After submission, retain the ITR12 and final ITA34. Review the amount payable or refundable and the source data shown on the assessment.

Documents and records to keep

  • Annual pension tax certificate and pension statement.
  • Payslips or payment advices showing PAYE.
  • Certificates for every additional income source.
  • Medical scheme and investment certificates where relevant.
  • ITR12, ITA34 and correspondence about any correction.

Important limits and exceptions

Do not treat a monthly pension and a retirement lump sum as the same type of income. A retirement lump sum normally involves a tax directive and different treatment. Similarly, a payment labelled pension can require further review if it comes from a foreign fund, a public-sector scheme, an injury or disability scheme, or a historic arrangement.

There is no safe general rule that a pensioner never needs to file or that PAYE always closes the tax year. Filing obligations and final tax depend on the facts and current SARS rules. If you receive a notice to submit, have other income, or see incomplete data, deal with the return rather than relying on an assumption.
