Is money received through PayPal or Payoneer taxable in South Africa?

Direct answer
Money received through PayPal, Payoneer or another payment wallet is not taxable or non-taxable because of the account used. The tax review starts with what the payment represents. It could be payment for services, a sale, a refund, a loan, a gift, reimbursement, a foreign payment, a transfer between your own accounts or something else. Keep enough evidence to prove the answer.
If you conducted a trade, SARS's current return questionnaire identifies that as a relevant ITR12 matter. A payment wallet does not remove the need to keep complete records or to consider the tax position. It can make reconciliation more difficult when several currencies, fees, card purchases and transfers are mixed in one account.
What this means in practice
Download the complete history, not only the monthly cash-out total. A payout may combine several customer payments and deduct processing fees, refunds or currency conversion. The right starting point is a schedule that connects every incoming entry to an invoice, contract, marketplace order, gift letter, loan agreement or other clear explanation.
Separate business and private use as early as possible. If a wallet receives freelance income and family transfers, keep a register that identifies the payer and purpose of each entry. Do not rely on memory months later. If a receipt is a refund or a transfer from your own bank account, preserve both sides of the trail.
The foreign location of a payment provider does not settle residence, source, exchange or foreign-tax questions. SARS's 2026 Budget Tax Guide describes the general residence basis, but a payment-wallet record cannot apply that rule to a particular transaction. A taxpayer must make an accurate declaration from the actual facts, using current SARS ITR12 material where a return is required.
Step-by-step
- Export full transaction histories.
Download entries for the entire tax year, including incoming payments, fees, refunds, currency conversions, purchases, transfers and closing balances.
- Match every receipt to its source.
Link it to an invoice, marketplace order, client contract, gift letter, loan agreement or other document. Flag unexplained entries immediately.
- Reconcile to the bank.
Show the movement from the wallet to the bank and keep balances outstanding at the relevant dates.
- Record costs separately.
Processing fees may be relevant to a trade, but retain the provider statement and avoid mixing them with unrelated private spending.
- Separate foreign information.
Retain currency and foreign-withholding records if applicable. Get advice before any foreign-tax credit or complex conversion treatment.
- Retain the final file.
SARS says supporting documents should be kept for at least five years. Include the submitted return and assessment with the wallet schedules.
Documents and records to keep
- Complete wallet statements and transaction-history exports.
- Invoices, contracts, marketplace orders and customer correspondence.
- Bank statements showing payouts and transfers.
- Gift, loan, refund or reimbursement evidence where applicable.
- Currency conversion and foreign-tax documents.
- Expense invoices, proof of payment and business-private split notes.
Important limits and exceptions
This guide does not say that every transfer through a payment wallet is income or that a foreign payment determines its own tax treatment. It also does not determine VAT, exchange-control requirements, foreign tax credits or deductions. The correct outcome depends on the underlying transaction and taxpayer facts.
Do not create artificial descriptions to fit a preferred tax result. If an entry cannot be explained from evidence, investigate it before filing. Incomplete wallet records are a reason to reconstruct the history rather than omit the amount.
When to get tailored advice
Get advice where the wallet has foreign currency, large balances, mixed personal and business use, multiple users, crypto-related transfers, foreign withholding or unexplained historical entries. TaxProof can help prepare an evidence reconciliation.
