Can I pay SARS through the MobiApp?

Direct answer

Yes, SARS states that Personal Income Tax and Travellers' payments can be made through the SARS MobiApp. Before you pay, select the correct account item and check the tax type, payment reference and amount. SARS says that a Statement of Account payment can allow you to choose an amount, while an ITA34 payment requires the full balance shown.

Do not assume that every SARS tax type or debt can be paid in the MobiApp. The available functions depend on the item and current app service. Use the official SARS app, not a payment link received in an unexpected SMS or email.

What this means in practice

The MobiApp is a payment channel, not an alternative source of tax records. The amount you pay still needs to connect to the correct taxpayer, tax type, period and SARS liability. A quick mobile payment can create problems if the wrong item is selected or if the payment evidence is not saved.

First decide what you are paying. Is it an amount on an income-tax assessment, an unpaid amount on a Statement of Account, or another item presented by the official app? The answer affects the amount you can select and the records you should retain. If the liability is disputed or not understood, do not make an uninformed payment merely to clear a screen.

SARS's August 2026 payment guidance explains that payment from a Statement of Account can be selected for the amount the taxpayer wishes to pay, whereas an ITA34 payment must cover the full balance due. That distinction matters. A partial payment may not settle the assessment and can leave a balance exposed to further charges.

Step-by-step

  1. Install or open the official SARS MobiApp.

Obtain the app only through a trusted official app store route identified by SARS. Confirm you are working in your own taxpayer profile before viewing tax information.

  1. Identify the liability.

Review the Statement of Account or ITA34 presented in the app. Check the taxpayer name, reference number, tax type, tax period, amount and any due-date information. If the account is unfamiliar, compare it with your eFiling or SARS records before continuing.

  1. Choose the payment item carefully.

If paying from a Statement of Account, decide the amount only after checking what balance remains and why. If the payment is from an ITA34, understand that SARS's guidance says the full balance shown must be paid through that route.

  1. Check the reference before authorisation.

The payment reference is important for allocation. Record the displayed PRN, amount and item before moving to bank authorisation. Do not reuse an old PRN for a different liability.

  1. Complete bank authorisation securely.

Follow the approved bank process. Do not disclose your banking password or one-time code to a caller, email sender or app message. A legitimate payment should not require you to abandon the official SARS or banking route.

  1. Retain both payment records.

Save the SARS item or confirmation and the bank confirmation. Note the date, amount, PRN and taxpayer reference. The bank record shows that a payment was made; the SARS account information helps confirm whether it is reflected against the intended obligation.

  1. Recheck the account later.

Review the relevant Statement of Account after processing. If an amount remains unpaid or the payment appears in the wrong place, do not pay again before investigating the allocation.

Documents and records to keep

  • Statement of Account or ITA34 used for the payment.
  • Screenshot or saved SARS confirmation with the PRN.
  • Bank confirmation showing the amount and date.
  • Taxpayer reference, tax type, period and reconciliation notes.

Important limits and exceptions

MobiApp availability and screens can change. Use current SARS guidance for the app and do not assume the route supports company, VAT, PAYE or every other tax type. If your payment relates to a formal dispute, payment arrangement, refund set-off or several tax periods, the app view may not provide the full context.

A bank confirmation does not automatically prove that SARS allocated the amount correctly. Check the SARS account before treating the liability as settled.

When to get tailored advice

Seek help if you cannot identify the debt, need to make a partial payment but are unsure of the result, or the payment does not appear against the intended item. TaxProof can assist with the reconciliation, while SARS controls final account allocation.
