How is income from online freelancing platforms taxed in South Africa?

Direct answer
An online freelancing platform is a marketplace and payment channel, not a tax exemption. SARS's 2026 Budget Tax Guide states that residents are taxed on worldwide income, subject to exclusions, while SARS's current questionnaire includes a resident who conducted trade or employment outside South Africa as a relevant return question. The taxpayer's residence position and the actual agreement still require review.
Do not start with the currency conversion alone. First identify the service delivered, client, contract, platform fees, date of each receipt, where you performed the work and whether foreign tax was withheld. Those details are needed before an adviser can assess return disclosure, foreign income, foreign tax relief, provisional tax and deductible costs.
What this means in practice
Freelance platforms commonly provide several documents: project invoices, client payments, service fees, refunds, payment-wallet transfers and year-end reports. Save all of them. A single net payout does not show the gross receipt, the platform fee or the date on which relevant amounts arose. Prepare a monthly reconciliation in the original currency and retain exchange-rate evidence used in the records.
A foreign payment does not by itself resolve a taxpayer's residence, source or relief position. SARS's Budget Tax Guide describes the general foreign-tax-credit principle, but the availability and amount of any credit are facts-specific. Keep the foreign tax document, payment statement and legal basis shown by the payer. Do not claim a credit based only on a platform dashboard label.
Business costs may be relevant, but they need a documented business purpose. Software, professional subscriptions, equipment, data, subcontractors and payment fees should be supported by invoices and proof of payment. Private subscriptions, mixed home costs and capital assets need more care. SARS's general deduction guidance does not permit a blanket percentage or an unsupported estimate.
Step-by-step
- Export all platform data.
Keep project contracts, client invoices, payment reports, fee statements, refunds and currency records for the full year.
- Build a gross-to-net reconciliation.
Show each client's gross payment, platform fees, refunds, foreign withholding and final transfer to your account.
- Record the service facts.
Note what work was performed, from where, for whom and under which contract. Do not rely only on a platform nickname.
- Preserve conversion evidence.
Keep the rate, date and method used in your accounting records. Treat conversion as a recordkeeping issue, not a substitute for classification.
- Separate foreign tax evidence.
Keep official documents from the payer or tax authority and identify the income to which any withholding relates.
- Review the final compliance position.
Use the current SARS ITR12 guidance and obtain tailored advice before claiming foreign relief or filing a complex freelance position.
Documents and records to keep
- Contracts, scopes of work, invoices and client correspondence.
- Platform payment, fee, refund and payout reports.
- Bank and payment-wallet statements with reconciliations.
- Currency conversion and foreign withholding evidence.
- Supplier invoices and proof for business costs.
- Submitted returns, assessments and support retained for at least five years.
Important limits and exceptions
This article does not decide tax residence, source, treaty relief, foreign tax credits, VAT registration or provisional-tax amounts. A taxpayer who has moved countries, works for overseas clients, receives payment through an agency or has tax withheld abroad should not use a generic online answer as a filing position. The current ITR12 return can change by year.
Do not omit income because it remained in a platform wallet or was paid to an online account rather than an ordinary bank account. The records should show the full trail and the actual legal arrangement.
When to get tailored advice
Seek advice where foreign taxes were withheld, services are performed in more than one country, income is paid to a foreign account, the work is conducted through a company, or the amounts are significant. TaxProof can organise a platform reconciliation for review.
