How do I verify old SARS debt or a debt collector from abroad?
A practical check before you respond, share information or pay.

Direct answer
Do not assume that a debt message or collection call is genuine. Verify the balance on your own SARS profile or through an official SARS contact route, then confirm any external collector against SARS's current appointed list. A legitimate SARS debt should be visible on the taxpayer's SARS account.
If SARS has genuinely handed the debt to an appointed external collector, SARS instructs the taxpayer to deal with that collector. Payment must still use an approved SARS payment option, never the collector's personal or business bank account.
If you live outside South Africa or cannot access eFiling
Citizenship and tax residence are different questions. Renouncing South African citizenship does not, by itself, prove that an old assessment or collection message is valid or invalid. Start by identifying the taxpayer record, tax reference, tax period, assessment and statement behind the demand.
- Try to obtain the Statement of Account through eFiling or the SARS MobiApp using a device and contact details you control.
- If you cannot access those services, contact the SARS Contact Centre for international callers on +27 11 602 2093 during the South African hours published by SARS.
- Ask for the tax reference, period, assessment date, balance and formal correspondence. Do not rely on the caller's summary.
- Compare the demand with the Statement of Account and the official handover notice.
- If another person will act for you, use the formal SARS representative or tax-practitioner route. Do not give anyone your eFiling password or OTP.
SARS also publishes digital channels such as the Online Query System, but identity verification and available services depend on the request. Keep the case number and copies of everything supplied.
Five checks for a claimed SARS debt collector
- The tax reference number matches your SARS record.
- The balance and tax period match the official Statement of Account.
- SARS has issued a handover notification.
- The company appears on SARS's current list of appointed external third-party debt collectors.
- Every payment instruction uses an approved SARS payment option.
SARS says it will never request your password, OTP, banking PIN or eFiling credentials by email, SMS, WhatsApp, social media or telephone. It also warns against following payment links or paying a personal account. Report suspicious messages through SARS's official phishing channel.
What this means in practice
SARS should send a formal handover notification. Verify the company against SARS's published list and confirm that the tax reference number and debt match eFiling. A genuine collector should not ask for payment to a personal or third-party account.
Cooperation does not mean accepting an incorrect balance. Provide proof of prior payments, disputes, suspension requests or changed financial circumstances to the collector.
Step-by-step
- Verify the handover letter on eFiling.
- Check the collector against SARS's current appointed list.
- Reconcile the amount with the SARS statement of account.
- Give the collector documents supporting payments or disputes.
- Select an available settlement or debt-relief route.
- Pay only through approved SARS payment options.
- Obtain written confirmation and monitor eFiling until cleared.
Documents and records to keep
- SARS handover notice.
- Collector identity and contact verification.
- Statement of account and assessments.
- Payment, dispute and suspension evidence.
- Arrangement documents and receipts.
Important limits and exceptions
Verification is not an admission that the amount is correct. If the assessment is wrong, the appropriate dispute or correction route may have a strict deadline. If the debt is correct but cannot be paid, payment arrangement, compromise and suspension processes have different requirements and effects.
Questions about prescription, tax residence, identity fraud, old unfiled returns and missing records are fact-sensitive. Do not ignore a verified notice, but do not accept an unverified demand merely because it sounds urgent.
When to get tailored advice
Get urgent help if the collector cannot be verified, the debt relates to a year you did not file, you have lived abroad for years, identity fraud is possible, the assessment is disputed, or enforcement threatens assets or business continuity. TaxProof can reconcile the account and notices, identify the correct SARS route, and represent you where formal authority is in place.
