How do I book a SARS branch appointment online?

Direct answer
If you are registered for tax, you can book a SARS branch appointment through the online eBooking form. Use the exact particulars SARS holds, choose the correct booking category and available slot, then keep the reference sent by email or SMS.
Only available slots display. SARS says the earliest appointment you can book or receive is after 48 hours, and a date cannot be more than 60 days ahead.
What this means in practice
Before booking, identify what you need SARS to do. The booking form asks whether you are acting as an individual, representative, tax practitioner or small, medium or micro enterprise. Selecting the closest category and reason helps SARS route the appointment.
The service is for registered taxpayers. Unregistered users are referred to eFiling to register. The online system validates the details you enter, so the name, ID or passport details and other particulars must match what SARS has on record. If the system cannot verify you as a registered individual, representative or tax practitioner, it will not complete the booking.
You need a valid mobile number or email address. Once confirmed, SARS sends a formal confirmation with a reference number by email or SMS. That confirmation records the route and appointment details. It is not a decision on the tax question you will discuss.
Step-by-step
- Gather the details you will need.
Have your tax number, registered identity details and current email address or cell number ready. Non-South Africans may use foreign passport or permit details. South African citizens should use their South African ID number.
- Decide the service and booking role.
Consider whether the appointment is for you as an individual, as a registered representative, as a tax practitioner or for an SMME. Choose the SARS service category that best describes the issue.
- Open the official SARS appointment page.
Choose the option to open the eBooking form. You can also make an appointment through the Contact Centre or, for certain registered personal-income-tax users, the SARS SMS route. This guide focuses on the online form.
- Enter particulars exactly as registered.
Complete the identity, contact and taxpayer information carefully. A mismatch can prevent the system from validating the booking.
- Choose an available date and time.
Select one available slot. SARS does not allow recurring or block bookings. Do not assume a particular branch or date will be available.
- Upload documents when asked.
SARS says a booked slot is automatically cancelled if supporting documents are not uploaded within 24 hours. If your booking asks for documents, upload the requested information promptly and retain copies.
- Keep the confirmation.
Save the email or SMS confirmation and reference number. For a video or telephonic appointment, SARS says an agent will call on the appointment date. Follow the confirmed route rather than arriving at a branch without checking.
Documents and records to keep
- Tax number and registered ID, passport or permit details.
- Valid mobile number or email address.
- Booking confirmation and reference number.
- The documents requested for the selected service.
- Notes and correspondence from the appointment.
Important limits and exceptions
Online eBooking does not guarantee a particular slot. It only displays available times. It also does not replace tax registration, profile maintenance or supporting documents that SARS requires before it can assist.
An appointment is not a filing deadline extension, a tax assessment review or approval of a request. Bring or upload the records relevant to the appointment, but keep the underlying tax question separate from the booking process.
Temporary pop-up branches and Mobile Tax Units can operate for specific dates and locations. Their confirmation messages identify the location and should be followed instead of assumptions based on a permanent branch address.
When to get tailored advice
Get tailored help if you cannot be verified, the matter involves several tax types, or you are unsure what records the appointment requires. A registered tax practitioner can help where the appointment concerns a complex return or active SARS case.
TaxProof can help assemble a focused document pack and a list of questions for a SARS appointment. SARS controls the booking availability and resolves the tax matter.
